Wow! I have to agree with Kristan. I couldn't stop reading this one. Except maybe for the use of the word "junk." :)

Ed. note: We don't usually approve pingbacks, but we liked this one.

[...] My short story is up on Splinter Generation. An early review from a friend calls it “The Big Two-Hearted River of the Iraq Generation.” I expect “sensational” and “spellbinding” to come soon. In all seriousness, it’s been a good experience working with the editors at Splinter and I fully recommend submitting to them. Thanks, guys. And thanks to the folks who’ve already read it.
What a good story. You tell more between the sentences than inside them.

I like "I see are headlights and an empty horizon and I feel spiders fingering up my back."

And "it’s flat and dry and it’s not home."

And, hell, one more: "He leans in and there’s a sneer, a bounce, in him." That's my favorite, actually. Creepily accurate. I've seen that.

Congrats. Nicely done.

An insanely readable story. I was halfway through it in what felt like seconds. It was also very visual, without getting mired in descriptions. The author did a great job immediately impressing a sense of setting and character upon us. Overall, I think this is top-notch work, and I congratulate the author.
