The Produce Aisle

Do not buy the lettuce
those frothy topped leaves
are festering with bugs.
Soft-bodied caterpillars follow
their jaws dragging their bulging
green weight.  Imagine
they could be crawling through your intestines
looping and burrowing through membranes
with their many sticky feet.
The broccoli is a colony of gnats
the cabbage is writhing with grubs
those bananas from Ecuador are ripe
with fruit flies, invisible
until they erupt from your throat.
Your body a breeding ground
as if you were already buried
and prone, those earth dwellers stripping
the flesh from your bones.  The rot
and wither - a molding tomato
the skin giving way
as you place it in your mouth and chew.

About The Splinter Generation

The Splinter Generation is a place by and for people born between 1973 and 1993. It's a venue for writers, artists and musicians from all different backgrounds to tell the story of our generation. More on us here.

Meet at the Gate, the web site of Canongate Publishing House, has this to say, "This is how we discover that the youth of today is not all shoot-'em-up gun- (or knife-) totin' hooligans. It’s great to see that there are a huge number of young adults who are seeking each other out - complete strangers - to try and establish an understanding with one another to create a more emotionally- and creatively-connected world."
