What I want it to be.

Poetry by Sam Corbo

It is the day after the storm,
a broken tree is outside
our window. It has cracked,
its insides struck black.
It is torn and fallen.

I look for you in the kitchen’s nook
but see only faint gray peek through
the clouds and curtains and onto the round table.
Messy brown halos become its ornaments.

Where did you take your coffee? To the wet roof?
Are you in your robe
with our neighbors by the tree
to comment on the carnage washed in.

In the eggshell hallway
between the kitchen and bathroom
I hear the shower.

Steam rises from cracks in the door
and the smell of chicory becomes overwhelming.

About The Splinter Generation

The Splinter Generation is a place by and for people born between 1973 and 1993. It's a venue for writers, artists and musicians from all different backgrounds to tell the story of our generation. More on us here.

Meet at the Gate, the web site of Canongate Publishing House, has this to say, "This is how we discover that the youth of today is not all shoot-'em-up gun- (or knife-) totin' hooligans. It’s great to see that there are a huge number of young adults who are seeking each other out - complete strangers - to try and establish an understanding with one another to create a more emotionally- and creatively-connected world."
